While watching a little of “American Gangster” over the weekend, I was reminded of Cord’s blog post:
My pride parade piece made the front page of Slate today. It’s controversial, I realize, but I’m proud of it nonetheless. Take a look if you’ve got the time.
PS The picture was not my idea. I repeat: the picture was not my idea.
The story of how Frank Lucas’ success hinged on his blending in with conventional business society wealth (and forgoing the flashy dress typical of lower-class criminals) parallels the argument Cord makes in his piece. It’s a classic tactic, that of infiltrating the opposition by appearing as one of them. I just find it interesting how it keeps reinventing itself through civil rights and gay rights. It’s sad that in our society, to be as successful as the status quo, many have to strip themselves of the amazing features that mark them as being anything other to the white, heterosexual male standard (as that’s usually who the status quo is).
